Scribble Picnic (Quinton's Walnut Boat)

Quinton loved his little walnut boat. One day, he'll set sail out on the ocean blue, seeking out adventures and new friends. Until then, playing at Platypus Lake will do just fine.

Boat is Scribble Picnic's theme this week and perfect for my little hedgehog in the making. Uh huh. I don't know about you, but I do enjoy being challenged in my artwork as it helps one learn and grow along the way. (Well, I don't always enjoy it but it's good for the creative soul. Ha!)

Right now, I'm teaching myself to understand how to illustrate greens better (like above with the trees and grass), making sure I'm creating depth along the way. It may sound pretty easy but let me tell you, it takes some work and a lot of squinting the eyes!

For more fabulous Scribble Picnic contributions, or to simply learn how YOU can join each week, take a spin over to Michael's blog. You don't be disappointed!

  6. Alexandra,
Your bark on your tree and the cattails have great depth. I know what you mean getting the different shades of green. I love your details and the hedgehog is adorable. A walnut boat!! Fantastic idea.

  10. Love the bullrushes, swing, and picnic blanket and basket - all ready for the Scribble Picnic no doubt!
How did you come up with Quinton for a hedgehog name? From 'quills' perhaps, cute! A walnut boat sounds quite posh - lovely wood.
Love his yellow wellies - he'll need them in the UK as we know only too well, haha!

Lovely illustration Alex - colors and details are brilliant and happy.
    Hugs - Mary

  13. This is such a cute sketch. I love your red glasses. I have a story from years ago - kind of a spiritual scavenger hunt with clues leading us to new experiences. My husband and I entered a restaurant and there in different parts of the restaurant sat three different women with red glasses. Funny thing we, we had been at a department store across the street in a mall and my husband had tried on a fragrance (men's cologne) but didn't remember what it was. So later when we saw the women - I said it must be "Red" for men - sure enough we went back and sought it out and that is what it was, lol. Giorgio's Red cologne. Your red glasses reminded me of that event about 20 years ago. Also, to me - greens are one of the hardest colors to give contrast and definition to what I use them in a sketch - so it's definitely a good subject to study. I always "intend" to join in Scribble Picnic and because I intend something then my commitment issues come to the forefront. I love both your and Michael's illustrations.

  16. Such a sweet painting. Your character is so sweet and I enjoy the details, they create a nice feeling of relaxing and playing.

A couple years ago i made two walnut boats. Filled them with wax and a sail and let them loose in my pond. They were fun to watch.

Watercolor can be a lot of work. So many layers to create depth. And then there is the time of letting it dry before more layers and depth can be added. I think you did wonderful illustrating your greens and all your colors.

  17. Beautiful little hedgehog and I do admire you for tackling the greens. I also find yellow hard to work. Although you seem to have the knack with yellow as well. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I treasure your comments.n:)
