Greensmith & Thackwray: A Touch Of Home

We've recently discovered a gem here in Scarborough - Greensmith and Thackwray. An independent coffee-shop (once an early 18th century home and later, clothing shop) tucked in between old buildings on St. Nicholas Street by the seaside. Inside, one is greeted with the smell of old wood and a collection of eclectic lights weaved in and out of various barista moka coffee pots hanging from the ceiling. To the back, a brick wall is perfectly nestled to the right of a charming wooden staircase, leading one upstairs to a warm, cozy nook overlooking the city street from above.

Downstairs, old wooden chairs (similar to those found inside an old school house) are situated around wood tables throughout with beautifully patterned cushioned seats lining the outside wall. In fact, if you're not careful, you'll begin to feel as if you're in your own home, cozied up in woolly socks with a perfect cuppa in hand! Uh huh That's how incredibly warm and inviting this cafe feels. Both the coffee and tea are fabulous, along with great food and baked goodies. My favorite? Their daily made croissants, with a smidgen of powered sugar sprinkled on top.

It's my favorite place to go when needing to get work done or simply to relax and take in the moment of the day.

  1. I could really feel the comfort of this coffee shop from your words and photos. And I understand how relaxing it is to sit in those kind of surroundings, especially when it's chilly outside.

    1. Aww, it really is. It's lovely to learn another new term for cosy! I've recently learned of the Danish term for cosy - Hygge. It's fascinating and SO describes hubby and I. :)

  5. That's such a lovely little cafe! I wish I could manage to work "out and about" with my writing but I always get so caught up in people watching and the environment around me! It becomes impossible to focus. . . but it is always inspiring to do so and lends itself to borrowed snippets of dialogue and descriptive actions/quirks/body language borrowed from others. :)

    1. Absolutely! I sometimes get caught up in people watching or meeting new peeps but that's something I thrive on for my creativity. It could be good and/or bad some days. haha :)

    2. That's how I tend to be to, Nicolas, but Alex actually thrives in such. It can be quite distracting at "home" too at my sister's with several family members here under one roof. :)

  9. So true and fabulous photos, Smoots! Their Cappuccinos are particularly notable, imho. Now, if only they had internet, things would be ideal! :) For those reading this, I appreciate too that generally their music is not too loud.
