Scribble Picnic: The Giving Tree

This little illustration came about a few days ago since I knew we were traveling back from California for the holidays and wasn't sure I'd have time to complete it after arriving home. Scribble Picnic's current theme is generous and how fitting for this holiday season.

My little woodland creatures are on a special journey to bring gifts to a little family of squirrels who lost their home during the recent winter storm. Everyone is traveling with gifts in hand to the giant village Christmas tree where a new home was made for this tiny family. Isn't it wonderful to have friends to count on?

Life seems so full of sadness and tragedy lately so my goal this holiday season with my work is to create illustrations that will stir the heart to give more love and kindness to those and the world around them.

OK, I'm off to grab a basket of mixed nuts/berries to drop off to the little squirrel family and some hot mulled wine for our picnic over at Michael's humble home.

  1. What a precious and generous story of giving to those who are hurting. Your heart and soul go into your drawings. They are alive with your love.

  7. Yes, your goal is a badly needed lift for all of us who feel the pain of the times we are living in. And what better example of generosity than nature and all of her adorable creatures. I love your art and I love your heart which always seems to be in the right place ...

  9. The artwork is beautiful but I really love the thought and story behind it. Such a good lesson in generosity for those that are less fortunate than us. I still have a pumpkin or two I can send along to help out.

  13. It's a beautiful story, a much needed sentiment and I delightful illustration all in one! :) I inherited my love of feeding our animal and bird families from my grandmother (her feeders and window sill visitors were one of my favorite memories of those earliest days) and I wouldn't trade the responsibility for anything! I love that they gather. . . both the year around residents as well as the seasonal arrivals, and that they know where to find me when they show up. I never know who might be peeking in our windows on any given morning or waiting on the wires just outside. :)

  14. I love what you've done with this--the shadow on the bear, his cheeks adn the light and darks. So cozy and magical indeed--jsut what we need this time of year as you noted. Beautifully done, Smoots, and sucha true statement--we all need each other for sure!

And, ha, I'd love some of that mulled wine. It won't even give me headache after a few sips as the real stuff does! Perfect.
