Who would of thought a sailor man would make it's way into my creative heart this week?! After visiting everyone's Scribble Picnic from last week, yesterday (terribly sorry!), I was utterly amazed at how many peeps really thought outside of the box! Seeing everyone's fabulous ideas challenged me to push myself with this week's theme - tie it up.
When starting my sketch, I had no idea where I was going to go with it other than imagining his beard "tied up". As I began to paint it, one of Michael's plaid lumberjack shirts came to mind. Considering he is a London boy, he wears these shirts quite well....almost too good! Ha Ha Anyway, I really enjoyed adding the various details from his beard, to his hat...down to his plaid shirt.
Now, I'm not sure he's up for picnicking but is willing to give it a shot. For me, I'm bringing some cherry tartlets. Him? Oh, he thinks some fish-n-chips will win everyone over...
Love your sailor man ...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Ha! I'll have fish and chips with that guy! I love your interpretation...actually I think I know him...lol. Beautiful sketch! :)
ReplyDeleteREally? :) Love your comments, Rain. Thank you so much. Really adds to our co-op picnicking.
DeleteBeautiful piece with his beard 'tied up', love all the details, plaid shirt, colours.
ReplyDeletethis is adorable! love the red beard tie up & the plaid pattern. I think he's ready for a winter picnic perhaps with jam?
ReplyDeletegreat take on the theme.
have a lovely day.
I think I'm in love with him. You know I am a die-hard Dodger Baseball fan, and that looks like Justin Turner....in a lumberjack outfit. HaHa. Great job, and not like your whimsical critters. Really nice.
ReplyDeleteOH Wanda! You are too cute! Love you!
DeleteExceptionally good, especially the plaid shirt. My lines would have been all over the place.
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable Alexandra. When I first saw him I thought Christmas. I love all the details. I wish it would get cold enough to dress like that, then rain and put out the wildfires up here!
ReplyDeleteWhilst I have ZERO affinity for ailing or hardy hard living sailors, I adore this piece. That beard is incredible! Must have taken you ages and another clever take on the "tie it up" theme, like Tammie also did. Funny, would have never occurred to me to do hair like that.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, so glad my shirt at least could inspire you this hardy way. That's probably about as far as I could there. Ha. Oh and I LOVE LOVE your always amusing write ups, darling. So fun. They really make the picnic that much more social. I can picture it all. The waft of the fish n chips and vinegar splashed on of course too but I think Id have to sample your lil tartlets first before going for anything that heavy. I wonder what the sailor man would talk about? Maybe he is Norwegian and doesn't speak English though? Hmm... I suppose I could do by best Muppets swedish chef for some kind of kinship connection? :) Thank you so much for doing this!
I've posted my colour version now btw and will be changing out the themes either tonight or tomorrow, so stay tuned! :)
OH, Alexandra...I love your unique take on the theme this week and your explanation of how the different elements were added. In my teen years, plaid flannel shirts used to be standard part of the winter dress for young men. I wore a few flannel plaid shirts myself back then...so comfy with jeans. I assume the lumberjack ones are padded for extra warmth? We have those ones too. Your sailor actually brings to mind a sea shanty I used to sing a lot growing up, purely because I liked the rhythm and Irish twang...have you heard "What shall we do with the drunken sailor?" Michael may have. If not, you can check out the Irish Rovers version on YouTube. I never sang all the verses...just the main one at the start.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the rest of your week. :)
This is a new take on "Tie it Up" for me. I don't believe I have ever seen a beard tied up even in pictures ... but I have to say you sold it with your art. I love the shirt (would love to get one just like it for my husband) and the red beard ... perfect, all of it!

I am completely thrilled with how much love and creativity you created this adorable fisherman!
ReplyDeletevery nice take on the theme :) love the way you have done his beard, great shapes :)
ReplyDeleteReally clever way to tie it up! I'm wondering if your red-bearded guy is any relation to Michael's little red-haired girl? Maybe the package she's untying is from him?
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful idea Alexandra - he really does appear to have stepped right out of Twin Peaks, or an Alaskan fishing camp! Love his eyebrows and sun-kissed cheeks - you always amaze me with these little touches which bring your people/animals to life.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend dear - we here are on tenterhooks awaiting Irma's decision as to which direction to head - very frightening knowing she is such a huge unforgiving storm!
Well Alex, I just love your sailor man! That beard was a hoot to look at. And I sat looking and looking at him until I could see Michael sporting that lumberjack shirt! You're right, he did wear it well! Smiling here...:D
ReplyDeleteVery nice. The detail in the beard is very fun! It looks like it was fun to draw!
ReplyDeleteQuite the original idea, with such unique hair!
ReplyDeleteHe is very handsome! Big Hugs!
ReplyDeleteNow that is funny! Love it.
