Sunday Sketches (A special little bear)

Over the past several months, I've been asking my mother more questions about her childhood. Sadly, my father's passed away and I know so little about his life growing up. In chatting with my mother one day, it broke my heart to learn she never, ever had a doll or teddy bear growing up. All she had to play with was a little red wagon she pulled to the top of a hill to ride down each day. I cried.

Yesterday, I learned something pretty significant about my family. Unfortunately, I'm not able to share it at this time....but hopefully, soon! Until then, enjoy this little doodle I made of my mother - picturing her as a little girl holding a special teddy bear.

  3. This is such a sweet little girl with her teddy. How sad that your mom never had a doll or a teddy. Hopefully she got a little cuddly toy later when she was a grown up.

  4. Awww, you are such a sweet soul, Alexandra... Your mother sure grew up in a different time, like mine, too, yet it is still sad. But - you captured it in a picture! Very cute.

  5. I hope you are giving this illustration to your Mom, I'll bet she'd treasure it. It's adorable, even without knowing what it signifies.

  6. So I bet your Mother loved her little red wagon the way we loved our Teddies and dolls. It is sad, but only if she knew she was missing out ... maybe she didn't find that out until she was older and was happy as a child. I sure hope so ... Love your drawing and I bet your Mother loves it as well :)

  12. That is so sweet of you to create that image with her in mind Alexandra. I had a large bear as a child that is still one of my favorite memories. Especially that age, for a year or two, when we were the same size. lol

But I want to say too that I had a favorite winter toy, an old, red-railed, wooden sled that I rode down a "hill" (hill is a strong term for it, more of a rise) and pulled back up all alone whenever it snowed. Never with anyone else. Over and over again. Now, it may not have been many people's experience, but the times I did things like that alone are now some of the best memories of my childhood. I'd hope your mother found a bit of joy in that solitude as well then, at least sometimes, because often it was those times we could make the world around us into anything we wished and that was usually far more peaceful, and more magical, than the way it was around adults or other children. . . at least for some of us. : )
