Scribble Picnic (My Secret Garden)

I've always loved the book, "The Secret Garden". In fact, I still hold a 2004 unabridged copy of this book with beautiful illustrations by Scott McKowen. So, when tossing around ideas as to what to create for this week's Scribble Picnic theme, I landed on creating my own version of a secret garden.

This particular painting took about a day and a half from beginning to end. It's not exactly how I'd hoped it would turn out but it's still lovely and hey - great practice, no?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and maybe what you would have done or not done, creating your own secret garden world. I intend on taking another stab at a second version just for fun!

Now, grab your picnic basket with goodies and follow me through the door of my secret garden.

  3. What a pretty garden! Perhaps too pretty to keep secret? I'm wondering how one goes about opening that elegant door. I have no idea how you did that butterfly, but I'm sure glad you put it in!

  6. such wonderful use of colors, I like it, even the butterfly that stops whenever you pause, an interactive art, I like that.

my secret garden would be like this too - flowers and plants and a mysterious door to somewhere wonderful.

    have a lovely day.

  10. Alexandra,
I will have to try doing my own secret garden. Before I read your words my first thought is - we need to prune this, it reminds me of The Secret Garden. That was my favourite book for teaching. We even saw the play and movie and compared them to the book.
Great painting - definitely the Secret Garden. Maybe add the little bird?
    Blessings,
    Janis

  13. What a magical piece, smoots! I love it so much too as everyone else has noted! It's magical indeed. Awesome job and thank you so much for doing it. Such a great variety of vegetation too. Very fun indeed and a clever way to show the door, showing a hint of it.
