Sunday Sketches: Pocketful of Memories

The weather has been quite lovely this week with light rain showers tucked in a few afternoons here and there. I don't know about you but I love the smell of the grass after a rainstorm. It reminds me of all those times growing up, sprawled out in the back yard at our neighbor's house, smelling the grass and watching fireflies dance around above us.

This past week, I started sorting through boxes in one of our closets, stumbling upon pictures and memories long forgotten. Such as, little notes of love my father would write and leave on the table for me to discover every morning before he left for work. I broke down in tears as I read each one, longing for just one more kiss on my forehead. He's gone now. He left this world way too early. I held in my hands a pocketful of memories I'll cherish until the end of time.

  1. I know that feeling when the memories of loved ones who have left us swell up in our hearts. It's hard not to move forward.

The smells of the seasons definitely bring on some good memories. Love the painting you did inspired by your summer grass childhood experiences.

  4. Thank you for another inspired Sunday sketch and post Alexandra. I love that you have saved those little notes from your dad to transport you back thru time. . .

When I moved across the country 20 odd years ago, my mother wrote to me EVERY day for the first 6 years or so. Just a little short note or two about what was going on. She'd put a sticker or two on each letter too, just like when I was a kid. Truth is, I was so busy that sometimes I did not even open them all then, though I always read them before disposing of them. Now, I still have a dozen or so of them, unopened, that I purposely put aside to read some day after she is gone.

Its funny how so many things can trigger such strong memories. Fresh cut grass, yes, the smell of rain, thunderstorms, the ice cream man's truck bell, old songs my grandparents loved, the sound of a sewing machine, the smell of certain foods made from family recipes etc etc. And fireflies. . . one of the few things I miss terribly from the East coast. Pure magic they are. . .

  9. Those memories - I wish I had written notes or such of mine, who also left way too early. Oh well - it is all part of the life cycle, right? I am glad that it inspires you to such beautiful work.

  17. You made me a bit weepy thinking about your looking at those little notes from your daddy. Oh, so sweet. Looking at your picture in the grass reminds me of my favorite picture by Georgia O'Keefe...the one of her lying o the ground ;looking up at the tops of the trees and the sky. I, too, do that when Buddy and I go for our little hikes...I pretend I am Georgia O'Keefe.....now, I can pretend I am you. How I adore your work. You have certainly influenced the little pictures I am painting these days. Thank you again and again for bringing me back tho my art. Hugs.

  19. Sadly, I no longer have either of my parents, Alexandra. I know all too well that gut wrenching, empty feeling of loss you were experiencing. Stumbling across just the smallest thing we've kept from a loved one that is no longer with us can bring home a flood of memories. So happy they were good ones for you. Loving your sweet little illustrations as well! (hugs)
