Yesterday I decided to take a break from all the paperwork I've been buried in for over a week to just relax and have fun. And oh boy, look at my results!
One thing I'm quickly learning is to not toss away a piece of work, even if it's looking terrible in the process of creating it. This watercolor card almost didn't come to life because of briefly feeling like that last night. So glad I didn't give up!
How do you deal with a freak out moment in your art of something not turning out the way you envisioned it at first?

I'm contributing this piece to Paint Party Friday this week. Please visit other peeps
here.
When something goes wrong - often I scream, stamp, throw it across the room, or scribble on it or rip it up (depending on the Media) then I leave it alone, often for a very long time, before working into it some more.
ReplyDeleteoh this is beautiful Sophia, lovely flowers and colour and design! The beauty of acrylic is you can just paint over it and start again!
ReplyDeleteage (mine) has given me a new attitude when it comes to drawing and painting...I always knew that a true artist is one who can turn a "mistake" into a positive! A younger me would go "oh no it's ruined" and give up...no more I keep going to see where that little mistake (that others usually can't see) will lead me and I'm a much happier person for doing so!
ReplyDeleteYour painting is so full of joy!
This looks great! The colors are so vibrant and they really pop! YAY I am glad you didnt give up on it -
ReplyDeleteHUGS -happy friday to you!
It looks great ^_^ Happy Friday!
ReplyDeletebeautiful and full of life! love all the colors in your watercolor box too! what kind are they? are you happy with them?
ReplyDeleteI usually do not have an idea of what a piece is going to look like. Since i have been learning mixed media, i have learned that if you don't like something, simply add to it, or cover it or try something else, pretty much anything can be changed with gesso or tissue paper ;-)
xx
Lovely dancing colors and great flowers ~ Wonderful! ~namaste, carol (Share the Creative Journey)
ReplyDeleteLove the pan paints you use ~ where does one by them?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors! Sometimes I feel depressed if something isn't turning out into a piece I'm happy with. That's why I keep starting so many different pieces because if get stuck on one, I might find some flow in another piece.
ReplyDeleteLove this piece...so vibrant and happy.
ReplyDeleteWish I did that in the past...lost some really nice pieces that I ditched;now they are only floating memories on the net. Now I know better.
Good for you to have the good sense to keep and not ditch :)
Such beautiful colours... i just found your blog (via PPF) and i LOVE your style. The banner is great too... "blue chair diary"... so comforting. I'll be back for another visit. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love this card! So pretty! For me, if a piece of art is not working out, I leave it alone, until, it's time to go back at it! Take Care ;o)
ReplyDeleteSo wonderfully fun and colorful! I have come to terms with the ugly stage - every piece I have worked on has an ugly stage - some horrific- but then it turns out just fine. I now laugh at the really ugly brutally horrifying stage because I know something better will be evolving from it!
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous! Love it!
ReplyDeleteYes I definitely know the ugly stage...
(I have those paints! ...but mine look rather messier!)
Your watercolour card turned out beautifully. It has a happy, cheery feel to it...so glad you didn't call it quits.
ReplyDeleteLove water colors. You do such beautiful work. I really need to get back to doing some art work.
ReplyDeleteHi Sophia, this is bright and sunny, just what we need in this snowy weather... :) If something is really not working I gesso over offending part or cover it with more paper or paint over the whole the thing and start again.....
ReplyDeleteoh yes! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I usually save paintings that I'm not happy with in a pile. I know I'll come back to it and it can even become my favorite! Never give up, that's my motto! Patsy from

Gorgeous vibrant colors! It important to stick with a painting and not give up too soon. Mine always go through the ugly stage. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the colour. I also find that often you have to keep going through a 'rough patch' and then you create something wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYay Sophia...this is mega-gorgeous! These florals are wonderfully alive and making me crave the magic of spring and summer...this is truly beautiful..gorgeous colorful palette...and love the photos..very uplifting!
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF!

Beautiful colors and design! I love the way you sketch. The idea of sketching in a calendar book is a good one. We all have these little booklets of one sort or another that come in the mail or are given out as promotional goodies. Paper is paper. Let's use it all! Thanks for visiting my blog. I think this is my first time here but it won't be the last, for sure.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful and I love the way it turned out. When things go wrong for me, I just learn to love what happenes:)

Sorry ....happens... I made a spelling mistake.

@ EVA -- I have a few different sets (others that are a lot messier than the one above). The one in this photo is a new set that someone sent me and so I'm just starting to use these watercolours so I'm guessing this set will begin to get messy, too!
ReplyDelete@ Tammie Lee -- Both sets I have are Artist's Loft" and can be found at Michaels. :)
Things don't always go as we think, but sometimes it is better not?.
ReplyDeleteImportantly, do what you love and enjoy doing it. Saludos
glad you didnt give up on this! Its so lovely! For me I try to walk away from it for a bit. Sometimes it works but then other times the art takes a hit and ends up in the trash! lol
ReplyDelete:)
What a lovely card you've created from something you didn't like in the beginning! How can you not be inspired from that big palette of wonderful color!
ReplyDeleteHow do I deal with things not turning out as I see them in my head? Well, that is generally how it works. Nothing turns out like I envision it, so I just have to accept the level I am at currently and keep working. I never throw anything away, I'm slightly hoardish ;)
Have a wonderful weekend! Happy PPF... Jaime
Thi sis beautiful! Love all the swirling colour!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful... so glad you didn't give up on it! When I feel that way, I keep going because I figure I can't make it any worse, lol! But this is gorgeous all the way around. Both the lines and the colors.
ReplyDeleteYour card is beautiful. So lively and colorful. I'm glad you kept going. For me, if it's oils or acrylics I paint over it until I like it. If it's watercolors I throw it away and start over.
ReplyDeleteYour watercolor florals are just amazing. Wow! You really put that paint to use. Looks great. Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteI have to come clean that I have a freak out moment with every single piece of work I do, and almost every blog post as well... I usually grab a cup of tea to settle the nerves.... no surprises there I suppose... but I just keep going now... try to take it s a good sign, and on a good day this works, but on a bad day it doesn't... your flowers are just too lovely and so glad you hung in there... Trace xx
ReplyDeleteIt is vibrant and happy. I LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF!

LOVE the vibrant colors and the variation in your flowers. Glad you didn't give up! Sometimes I set aside a piece for awhile if I want to give up. Given some space I usually have a fresh perspective when I return.
ReplyDeleteSO SO pretty! I LOVE all that gorgeous bold color! I agree with Catherine - if I'm having a tantrum over a piece ;) I just try to set it aside for later. Some of those have been set aside for years now though, lol! xo
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely lovely Flowers! And how do you keep your watercolor pans so clean! You should see mine! On second thought- scratch that!
ReplyDeletegood thing you didn't throw this out. I love the carefree expression in this piece especially the colors! Whenever I encounter such freak out moments I strive to either change it or start over but not discarding the art. It's still art.
ReplyDeleteFabulous flowers! So glad you didn't pitch this. Opening an envelope and finding that card would make my day.
ReplyDeleteI love your results. The color is wonderful. So fresh and full of life.

Love these cheerful, happy, bright flowers. I'm slowing learning that if I don't like a particular stage of a piece, keep going, it'll get better (usually!).
ReplyDeleteThese look wonderful! Love the bright, happy colours. If something doesn't work out first, I just keep going, and sometimes I'm surprised at how it suddenly starts coming together.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Almost everything I do goes through an ugly stage. Sometimes it comes out of it and sometimes it just gets worse. I figure if it is already ugly, I may as well keep going and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteThis is stunning! I love the vivid cheerful colors. (I'm a little late answering your question but I used watercolor and qouache)
