Yesterday I decided to take a break from all the paperwork I've been buried in for over a week to just relax and have fun. And oh boy, look at my results!
One thing I'm quickly learning is to not toss away a piece of work, even if it's looking terrible in the process of creating it. This watercolor card almost didn't come to life because of briefly feeling like that last night. So glad I didn't give up!
How do you deal with a freak out moment in your art of something not turning out the way you envisioned it at first?

When something goes wrong - often I scream, stamp, throw it across the room, or scribble on it or rip it up (depending on the Media) then I leave it alone, often for a very long time, before working into it some more.
ReplyDeleteoh this is beautiful Sophia, lovely flowers and colour and design! The beauty of acrylic is you can just paint over it and start again!
ReplyDeleteage (mine) has given me a new attitude when it comes to drawing and painting...I always knew that a true artist is one who can turn a "mistake" into a positive! A younger me would go "oh no it's ruined" and give up...no more I keep going to see where that little mistake (that others usually can't see) will lead me and I'm a much happier person for doing so!

ReplyDeleteI usually do not have an idea of what a piece is going to look like. Since i have been learning mixed media, i have learned that if you don't like something, simply add to it, or cover it or try something else, pretty much anything can be changed with gesso or tissue paper ;-)

ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors! Sometimes I feel depressed if something isn't turning out into a piece I'm happy with. That's why I keep starting so many different pieces because if get stuck on one, I might find some flow in another piece.

ReplyDeleteSo wonderfully fun and colorful! I have come to terms with the ugly stage - every piece I have worked on has an ugly stage - some horrific- but then it turns out just fine. I now laugh at the really ugly brutally horrifying stage because I know something better will be evolving from it!

ReplyDeleteHi Sophia, this is bright and sunny, just what we need in this snowy weather... :) If something is really not working I gesso over offending part or cover it with more paper or paint over the whole the thing and start again.....

Beautiful colors and design! I love the way you sketch. The idea of sketching in a calendar book is a good one. We all have these little booklets of one sort or another that come in the mail or are given out as promotional goodies. Paper is paper. Let's use it all! Thanks for visiting my blog. @ EVA -- I have a few different sets (others that are a lot messier than the one above). The one in this photo is a new set that someone sent me and so I'm just starting to use these watercolours so I'm guessing this set will begin to get messy, too!

ReplyDeleteHow do I deal with things not turning out as I see them in my head? Well, that is generally how it works. Nothing turns out like I envision it, so I just have to accept the level I am at currently and keep working. I never throw anything away, I'm slightly hoardish ;)

ReplyDeleteI have to come clean that I have a freak out moment with every single piece of work I do, and almost every blog post as well... I usually grab a cup of tea to settle the nerves.... no surprises there I suppose... but I just keep going now... try to take it s a good sign,and on a good day this works, but on a bad day it doesn't... your flowers are just too lovely and so glad you hung in there... LOVE the vibrant colors and the variation in your flowers. Glad you didn't give up! Sometimes I set aside a piece for awhile if I want to give up. Given some space I usually have a fresh perspective when I return.

ReplyDeletegood thing you didn't throw this out. I love the carefree expression in this piece especially the colors! Whenever I encounter such freak out moments I strive to either change it or start over but not discarding the art. It's still art.

Love these cheerful, happy, bright flowers. I'm slowing learning that if I don't like a particular stage of a piece, keep going, it'll get better (usually!).

ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Almost everything I do goes through an ugly stage. Sometimes it comes out of it and sometimes it just gets worse. I figure if it is already ugly, I may as well keep going and see what happens.
